There´s something special about
being on a big lake.
Perhaps it reminds you of how small you are.

WONDERFUL
TEVSJÖN/ORSJÖN
Home of the biggest pikes of them all...
It´s a cold morning. Almost -10 degrees Celsius. Peter Fröjd
and I have just placed out our usual amount of "angeldon"
(a kind of angling-rigg) and the usual amount of giant-roaches (big bait
= big fish). |

With
a small sledge which
you put your things in,
there´s no problem getting everything with you when
you´re
on icefishing after big pikes.

The
better mood you´re in, the more angling-riggs will be
placed out. Today it became 30 - it´s been a while since
we felt the power of a real big pike - and more angeldon gives
you a better chance!
Todays fishing takes place on one of Peters "magic-bigpike-spots" as
he calls it. Hunting grounds for the pikes, that he found after weeks
of intensive fishing. Both in the summertime with boat and echo-sounder,
also during the winterperiod with a deepfrozen fisherman-body. Why stay
at home in your warm house, when you can be outside in -30 degrees celsius?
A kind of madness that gives you tons of experience.

If you want BIG pike you need BIG
roach...

The
fishspot rises abrupt from the bottom of lake Orsjöns
depth, at a drop-off there the small fish literally smacks
in the wall when they´re being chased by lake Orsjöns
pike-submarines.
The big pikes knows that, and for us fishermen is such a spot maybe the
only possibility of getting in contact with the biggest pikes.
We put out our angling-riggs along the 16-meterline curve and the baits
are placed
on the big pikes eating-depth, which means 4-6 meter.
-Today, says Peter, I´m a little bit worried.
He´s referring to the bad fishing thats been characteristic during
the latest trips - Peters bad days are often full of pikes about 7-8
kilos, but if your aim i set high so...
The reason for choosing this particulare pike-spot is that exactly one
year ago, Peter
caught a 12 kilos pike on this spot. Such things often repeats, specially
if the
weatherconditions are similar. Today it´s so.....
- Be prepared when the sun rises over the mountains. If there will be
any fish today
it will happen in the morning, says Peter, and walks away to an angling-rigg
250 meter away.
Just when the sun´s starting to paint the shadows brighter, theres
at strike at one of our
angling-riggs. The rush is one of the most impressive I´ve seen.
The pike runs directly away with 75 meter of the line in a furious race
downstream.
Lucky for me that Peter always hav 150 meters of line on his angling-riggs.
I pull the line as hard as I can just to make sure that the pike´s
get properly hooked.

...and the anglers indispensable aid is
a batterydriven oxygen pump that keeps the roaches alive.

Peter with two "small" pikes. Short
and fat just like tiny christmas pigs...

With
so much line between me and the pike it´s necessary.
I feel the pike jerking, long and heavy - an indication that it´s
a big pike!
Temperature´s rising...
Fantasys about the 17-kilos pike is starting to fly around in my brain.
The pike gets closer. I see it passing by when I look down the bore hole
. It´s big!
I increase the pressure. The pike fights strongly but soon runs out of
strength and "swims" through the hole and up on the ice. A
short and compact pike about 7 kilo lays in front
of my feets.
What a terrific start of the fishingday!
If the day starts with a tiny pike on half
a kilo, it will be bad fishing. A common expression from
Peter. But a 7 kilos!?
Holy moses!
After unhooking the pike I hear an eager noise from yet another angling-rigg.
After a 50 meter run I get a grip on the line and the race is on. This
pike has been drinking the same rocket-fuel as the one before and races
furiously downstreams. After an exiting drill the pike appears in the
hole and soon it´s on the ice. A nice 5 kilo pike that joins the
previously pike. So beautiful...
When Peter returns he looks satisfied at the pikes.
- Probably the fishing-periods over for to day, he says.
The clock has already twentyfive past seven
in the morning, and of course he´s right. Theres not
som many pikes on a fishingspot like this. This is a hunt
after the largest specimens.
We´ll catch another pike before the day´s over. A small one
that makes a perfect ending of an incredibly beautiful morning.

Peter Fröjd with his 12 kilos pike, caught
the day after...

Note: Peter went fishing himself the day after
to try another one of his many "magic-bigpike-spots".
Unfortunately I couldn´t accompanie him.
He called me on the afternoon and told me about a 12 kilos...
